Why Real Fitness Has Nothing to Do With the Gym (and Everything to Do With You)

by Karen Roberts

Hi everyone, and welcome back to Conversations with Karen.

If you’re starting out on your journey to find an exercise routine that actually makes sense for your life, I’ve got a bit of good news that might surprise you:

👉 You don’t need to do heavy workouts to get real, lasting results from your body.

That’s right. You don’t need to lift weights like a bodybuilder or sign up for high-intensity classes to stay strong and capable as you age.

The Truth About Exercise—Especially As We Get Older

Let’s be honest. The Fitness world has turned into a bit of a circus, hasn’t it?

From 60-minute walks to spinning classes to people shouting motivational quotes at you while you’re trying to breathe—where does it end?

More importantly: Is any of that actually right for you?

If you’re over 40, 50, 60 or beyond, chances are your body has different priorities now. And real fitness—the kind that actually supports your life—doesn’t always look like a workout.

Functional Fitness: What It Really Means

Here’s what truly matters:
How you use your body every single day.

It’s not about how many hours you clock in at the gym.

It’s about how well your body supports you during everyday tasks—like getting out of a chair, reaching for a plate, lifting a laundry basket, or wiping down the kitchen counter.

This is called functional fitness, and it’s what I teach because it’s what really matters.

If you move your body properly during these tasks, you create seamless, perpetual strengthening.
Yes, that means you’re working out while you live your life. Imagine that!

Why You Don’t Need a New Year’s Resolution to Get Fit

We all know what happens on January 1st. New year, new you… right?

Except by the second week of January, the gym shoes are gathering dust, and that fitness app hasn’t been opened since.

That’s because the problem isn’t you. It’s the approach.

When you understand how to move efficiently, every task becomes a mini workout. And when you live like that, fitness becomes something sustainable—for the rest of your life.

Become Your Own Exercise Machine

If this resonates with you and you’re ready to ditch the “go hard or go home” mindset, I invite you to take a deeper dive into what I call real fitness.
